Redefining Literacy in Grades 7-12 — Strategies for Document, Technological, and Quantitative Literacy

We in the United States claim to be the global leaders. We say our K-12 legislation and college-bound initiatives are working or soon will. Yet, here are the facts.

We teach document, quantitative, and technology (DTQ) literacy to few students.
There are no systematic programs in the United States to address and teach workplace, community, and lifestyle literacy comprehensively.
Other countries are years ahead of us in creating programs to address these issues (e.g., Norway, Germany, Switzerland, China, India, Singapore, Canada).
We do not use comprehensive strategies for teaching skills in DTQ literacy.
We score poorly on multiple measures of these highly valued skills on both national and international assessments.

It is time for a new plan. It took a decade to convince schools to focus on literacy in the content areas, but we do not have that long to bring about a new wave of change. Document, quantitative, and technology (DTQ) literacy defines that next change.

Redefining Literacy in Grades 7 - 12 — Strategies for Document, Technological, and Quantitative Literacy gives schools an understanding of the types of literacy that are necessary for success in our global economy as well as the materials to teach these new literacies to students. A summary of the latest research provides some perspective on technology as it relates to literacy, an explanation of the literacy skills that are required in the global and digital marketplace, and a competitive look at the need to teach students skills for document, technological, and quantitative literacy (DTQ).

The kit is filled with strategies for teachers of all subjects to use in their classrooms immediately, including examples covering electronic and multimedia formats. The methods and tools will help schools better meet the needs of this generation of learners as we prepare them for an unknown future.

A DVD presentation by author Lin Kuzmich on the importance of teaching DTQ literacy and a CD with examples and handouts are also included.
