Strategies for High School Students with Disabilities
in the General Education Curriculum
Strategies for High Schools Students with Disabilities in the General Education Curriculum is designed to assist high schools and their districts in improving the performance of special education students.
Chapter 1 presents a tool for a district to use to assess its ability to sustain improvements made by its schools. Improvements should not diminish if building leaders leave. The System Strategies Checklist identifies issues that need to be addressed at the district level to ensure improved performance over the long term.
The establishment of a general education intervention system reduces the reliance on special education and improves the success of struggling students. Response to Intervention (RtI) is an example.
Chapter 2 describes the ingredients that are necessary for any intervention approach to become systemic, thereby strengthening the general education system.
Chapter 3 highlights the steps necessary to implement a systemic intervention system that is likely to be sustainable and become an integral part of the general education system.
Chapter 4 is dedicated to co-teaching. When implemented correctly, this approach appears to show significant benefit, but it needs to be put into operation with adequate staff development. The chapter gives both teachers and administrators a foundation for how to install and support co-teaching, using best practices from successful schools.
Chapters 5-7 highlight strategies used by three successful high schools — Brockton High School, Caprock High School, and A. J. Moore Academy — to bring about positive results through a clear vision of what they want to accomplish and a persistent belief that students with disabilities can and will succeed.
